Q: What does STAR stand for?
A: STAR is an acronym for Telescopy, Astronomy and Radio. Based out of New Jersey, STAR’s mission is to spread information and interest regarding amateur astronomy-science. They meet the first Thursday of each month.

Q: What does heliocentric and geocentric mean?
A: Geocentric means an Earth-centered universe. Before the Renaissance, people thought that the heavens rotated around the Earth. Copernicus, an early astronomer, found that we actually revolve around the sun (heliocentric). The heliocentric model is what we still follow today.

Q: What’s the IAU?
A: The IAU is the International Astronomical Union–an organization that determines and resolves issues regarding outer space. Their recent findings have classified Pluto as a dwarf planet, thereby taking it out of the original nine planets in our solar system.
